RCSL Conference 2024

Bangor University hosts the Research Committee on Sociology of Law (RCSL) international conference. The conference topic is “Representing Law” and alludes to the necessity to represent, symbolise, and communicate law. It covers a range of socio-legal topics RCSL members and others are researching, such as the work of lawyers, the handling of law by public officials, law in the arts and in popular culture. Papers will be presented by members of the RCSL Working Groups and guest scholars on a wide range of topics.


Co-sponsored by the Vereinigung für Recht und Gesellschaft, the DGS-Sektion Rechtssoziologie, the Journal of Law and Society and the Centre of Law and Society at Cardiff University, the Centre for Socio-legal Studies, Oxford University and the Associazione Italiana di Sociologia - Sezione Sociologia del diritto.

What we see today is a spectacular, luxurious building of the 19th century where once a medieval castle stood. The National Trust describes the country house as “neo-Norman phantasy castle”. It is a statement of power by a wealthy industrialist who exploited plantations in Jamaica and later invested in slate mines in North Wales.

“Early bird” conference fees apply until 30 June 2024.
Conference fee includes catering. Conference dinner and tours are optional extras. 
Accommodation must be booked separately.
